What to Expect from Your Acupuncture Treatment

As an acupuncturist based in Surbiton, Surrey, I prioritise creating a calm, supportive environment. Your treatment will be tailored to your individual needs. The first appointment begins with a detailed consultation to understand your health history, current concerns, and any medication or other treatment you are receiving. This helps me design a treatment plan for you which we c

Your First Session: A Step-by-Step Guide

1. Consultation

We’ll begin with an in-depth discussion about your health. I’ll ask about your main concerns, any symptoms you’re experiencing, previous treatment that you have received, the results of any relevant blood tests and investigations and I’ll also ask about your general health. I will also feel your pulse on both wrists and look at your tongue, which helps me understand how best to support you. This is also your opportunity to ask questions you may have.

2. The Treatment Environment

After our discussion, you will lie down on a comfortable treatment couch in preparation for the treatment. You can remain fully clothed, and I’ll use covers to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the session. You may be lying on your front or on your back.

3. The Acupuncture Process

Once you’re settled, I’ll insert ultra-fine, single-use, sterilised needles on specific points on your body. Most people feel little to no discomfort, though you may experience a brief sensation of warmth, tingling, or heaviness at the needle site. I may also use abdominal palpation to help me choose the acupuncture points best suited to you.

What you might feel:

  • Relaxation: Many patients describe a deep sense of calm during and after treatment.
  • Mild warmth or tingling: This is a sign that the qi (vital energy) is being activated.
  • Relatively painless: The needle sensation should not feel sharp or intense.

The needles typically remain in place for 25–30 minutes. During this time, you can rest, listen to the music, or simply close your eyes.

4. After the Needles Are Removed

I’ll spend a few minutes discussing your treatment and any aftercare advice, such as staying hydrated, resting, or avoiding intense physical activity for a short period. If you have any questions after your session, I’m always happy to address them.

How You Might Feel After Your Session

Everyone’s experience is unique, but here are some common reactions:

  • Improved sleep: Many patients report sleeping more deeply after acupuncture.
  • Increased energy: You may feel more alert and focused.
  • Emotional release: Acupuncture can sometimes bring up emotions as the body releases stored tension. This is a normal part of the healing process.

It’s also possible to feel a little tired or achy after your first session, especially if your body is adjusting to the stimulation. This is temporary and usually passes within a day or two.

What to Expect Over Time

Acupuncture is most effective when received as part of a course of treatments. The number of sessions you’ll need depends on your individual needs and your body’s response. Some people find significant relief after just a few sessions, while others may benefit from regular treatments to maintain balance.

Typical treatment plans might include:

  • Acute conditions: 4–6 sessions, spaced a week or two apart.
  • Chronic conditions: A longer course of treatments, with sessions gradually spaced further apart as your health improves.
  • Preventative care: Regular sessions every 4–6 weeks to maintain wellbeing.

Your treatment plan will be personalised to your goals, and we’ll review your progress together at each session.
